“I hope it can be a step forward in my activism, in that I shouldn’t always be the one talking to people,” she says.

“I don’t have mountains of books in my home, but I just know how impactful it’s been for me in terms of opening my eyes to new perspectives.” Indeed, Rapinoe’s selection of books is largely nonfiction, with a particular spotlight on marginalized voices. (First up, and dropping on September 14, is Tarana Burke, whose memoir, Unbound, charts her experience as the founder of the #MeToo movement.) “I’ve been thinking about a book club for a while,” says Rapinoe. Now, Rapinoe is expanding her love for reading into something more concrete, launching a book club with the subscription service Literati that will be accompanied by monthly recorded conversations between Rapinoe and her chosen author. It reminds me how big the world really is.” I love playing soccer, of course, but if I can’t physically escape through sport, I can escape into a different perspective through a book or learn something new. “Obviously, we’re on planes a lot, we’re in hotels a lot, so the transient lifestyle lends to that. “I mean, it’s really just a nice activity to do because it doesn’t require any real physical exertion,” says Rapinoe. And within the world of fashion, her shock of hot pink hair and inimitable style have seen her become the face of Loewe, work with celebrity stylist Karla Welch on a number of razor-sharp tailoring moments on the red carpet, and even cofound Re-Inc, a gender-neutral clothing line.ĭespite all of these achievements, however, Rapinoe derives some of her greatest pleasure from something much more simple: reading. Known for her advocacy and philanthropy around LGBTQ+ rights, Rapinoe has firmly thrown her weight behind a number of wider causes too, from supporting equal pay for women in sports to protesting police brutality. After rocketing to fame over the past decade as part of the United States women’s national soccer team, taking home two World Cups and Olympic gold, she’s made her activism off the pitch equally noteworthy.

It goes without saying that Megan Rapinoe is more than your average soccer player.
